What Is American Roulette?
Blaise Pascal created the roulette game in the 18th century in France. It was by accident as he attempted to create a perpetual motion machine. However, instead, he ended up inventing one of the most popular casino games to date. Initially, the roulette wheel did not have a ‘zero’ pocket on it. But it was added in 1842 so that the house would have a slight edge over players.
As the game spread across Europe and to the US, there have been several variations. The American version of roulette came along soon after. It has two ‘zeros’ on the wheel which provides a significant house edge. Therefore it has 38 pockets on the wheel as opposed to 34. But among the most popular options are also the European roulette and French roulette and they all differ a little.
American Roulette Wheel and Layout
In most online and physical casinos, the wheel is usually located at one end and the betting area is next to it. However, some casinos in Monte Carlo have the wheel in the centre and the betting area on either side. Numbers ranging from 1 to 36 and two zeros are printed around the wheel to mark the pockets. This is where the ball will land after the wheel is spun. In order to reduce bias, the numbers are arranged in a non-sequential order. They are also coloured red and black alternately, however, the two zeros are always green.
On the betting area, these same numbers are printed in 3 columns and 12 rows. But this time they are in sequential order and the two zeros are at one end. This is where players place their bets (chips). Then the croupier spins the wheel and tosses the ball in the opposite direction. Eventually, the ball falls in one of the pockets and that determines your win or loss.

How to Play American Roulette
In order to learn how to play American roulette, the most important thing is to learn your options. Most importantly, you should get yourself familiar with the various bet types you can choose from, as in any roulette game odds vary depending on the bet type. All of your options can be split into two categories – inside and outside bets. Everything else is simple – pick a bet, wait for the ball to settle, and collect your wins!
Inside Bets
Inside bets are those placed within the 3 columns and include:
- Straight bet – a bet on a particular number.
- Split bet – a bet on two neighbouring numbers.
- Street bet – a bet on three numbers on any of the 12 rows.
- Corner bet – betting on 4 numbers which make a complete square.
- Double street – a bet on 6 numbers in adjacent rows.
Outside Bet
These bets are marked around the columns of numbers and may include:
- High/low – a bet on a range either from 1 to 18 or 19 to 36.
- Red/black – a bet on either black or red coloured pockets.
- Even/odd – a bet on odd or even numbers
- Dozen – a bet on a dozen: 1-12, 13-24 or 25 -36.
- Column bet – a bet on all numbers within the same column.
Each bet has a different payout and the croupier will inform you about it before spinning the wheel. When playing online, these payouts are processed automatically. However it is still important to note how each bet can reward you. For example, straight bets have the highest payout at 35 to 1, but the odds are quite steep at 37 to 1. On the other hand high/low, red/black and even/odd bets have the lowest payout of 1 to 1. The other outside bets have a payout of 2 to 1. Finally, inside bets have varying payouts depending on the bet.
Popular Betting Strategies
Generally speaking, roulette in any of its forms is a game of chance. However, players always strive to put themselves over the edge. Hence quite a few roulette betting strategies have come about.
The Martingale System
The most popular strategy is the Martingale system. This strategy dictates that you double your bet every time you lose. However, when you win you should resume playing with your original bet size. The idea is that you can make up for your losses when you eventually win. This is most suitable for outside bets with low odds.
The Paroli System
The Paroli system is slightly different because you only double your bet when you win. When you lose – bet the same amount. It makes the strategy safer for players because you can minimize your losses.
D’Alembert’s System
This strategy belongs to the insurance rate system. D’Alembert’s strategy allows you to change the sizes of bets as a result of losing and winning previous bets differently than when playing according to a negative progression system. Insurance bets allow you to reduce the next bet if you win. For example, if your bet wins, the size of the next one decreases, if it loses, it increases.

Tips for Beginners
If you’re new to American roulette, here are some roulette tips that will help you win more bets:
- Stick to outside bets – the high payout of straight bets may be very appealing, but the odds of winning such bets are very low.
- Don’t depend only on one betting strategy – although some betting systems are logical and generally work, you should not rely too much on them. For instance, you could exceed the table limit with the Martingale system even before making up for your losses.
- Manage your bankroll wisely – do not get carried away by the game and forget about your budget. Ultimately, it’s about having fun but you shouldn’t spend more than you can afford to lose.
Conclusion
Now that you know how to play American roulette like a pro, it’s time to hit the casinos. Have a look at our casino reviews and go have some fun. In addition, try to take advantage of free spins and casino offers whenever you can. This way you can practice the betting strategies from earlier.
